Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes are a great and healthy vegetable side dish. The Instant Pot makes it easy to cook sweet potatoes in no time.

Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a favorite of mine because they’re extremely healthy and nutritious.

They usually take a lot longer to bake in the oven because they’re quite dense, but the Instant Pot helps cook these delicious sweet potatoes in less than half the time!

Because the size of sweet potatoes vary so much, try and buy sweet potatoes that are all about the same size and shape if you plan on cooking them at the same time.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy an Instant Pot sweet potato is to add cinnamon sugar, sour cream, and Chef Shamy honey cinnamon butter. It’s sooo good!

Sweet Potato Ideas

Sweet Potatoes are great to eat for any meal of the day. Here are a couple ideas:

  • Breakfast: Chunks of Instant Pot sweet potato with a scoop of cottage cheese, hot sauce, and a runny or scrambled egg.
  • Lunch: A whole sweet potato with a mixture of bbq chicken or pork, cheese, beans, and a creamy dressing.
  • Dinner: Plain, with butter and sour cream; mashed, with cinnamon/sugar/butter; Sweet Potato Casserole.
  • Other: Mash with a steamed apple and carrots, then puree to make an easy Instant Pot baby food.
  • Side Dish: Sweet Potatoes make an excellent healthy side dish to any main protein such as Instant Pot chicken legs, Instant Pot bbq ribs, Instant Pot country style ribs, or Instant Pot bbq chicken!

Instant Pot Steamer Basket

Making your Instant Pot sweet potatoes in a steamer basket makes it extremely easy to pull them in and out of the Instant Pot. You don’t want your sweet potatoes sitting in the water if you cook them with the skins on.

Here’s my favorite steamer basket!

If you’d like to make your sweet potatoes in the air fryer, it’s incredibly simple to do! You can find the instructions in my air fryer sweet potato post.

How to cook sweet potatoes in Instant Pot

  • Choose sweet potatoes that are as uniform in size and shape as possible so they all cook at the same rate.
  • Wash and scrub potatoes with clean water (no need to poke holes)
  • Place potatoes in a steamer basket or on the trivet in the Instant Pot.
  • Add 1 cup of water to the Instant Pot liner.
  • Cook on high pressure for 15-20 minutes for small sweet potatoes, 20-25 minutes for medium, and 25-30 for large and extra large sweet potatoes.
  • Do a quick release after cooking so you can quickly test them with a fork and make sure they are done cooking.
  • Stab the potatoes with a fork or knife. If there is any resistance, they will need a couple more minutes of cooking. Add 1/2 cup more water to the Instant Pot and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes.
  • Carefully remove the potatoes from the Instant Pot with tongs or spoon. They fall apart easily and the skins will have already started to come off, so be careful!
  • Enjoy!

  1. Incredible timing! I have 3 sweet potatoes sitting on my counter to be cooked in the Instant Pot today. I was planning on making them last night for dinner, but it was a little too late to start them. Looking forward to trying this tonight.
